Kids Sport Cancellations in the Sutherland Shire: What to Check When Weather Hits

Kids Sport Cancellations in the Sutherland Shire: What Parents Need to Know

When the rain starts coming down, and everyone’s guessing what the weekend’s games will look like, here’s where to check official cancellations and what to do if kids’ sport gets called off.

Check these first

Before assuming sport is cancelled, check:

When are cancellations announced?

  • Weekend decisions are often made early in the morning.
  • Weekday/weeknight training decisions are often made in the afternoon.
  • Sometimes cancellations are last-minute if conditions change.

Does rain mean sport is cancelled?

Not always. Sport may still go ahead if:

  • the ground is open
  • the surface is safe
  • there is no lightning
  • visibility is okay
  • the venue drains well

Sport is more likely to be cancelled if:

  • grounds are closed
  • fields or courts are slippery
  • there is flooding
  • lightning is nearby
  • visibility is poor
  • strong winds make conditions unsafe

Who makes the call?

  • For weekday training, Council ground closures are often the first place to check.
  • For weekend games, check your association, competition, club or team app.

If a ground is officially closed, clubs usually cannot override it.

Will it be rescheduled?

If kids sport is called off, the outcome depends on the sport, competition, and venue.

  • Competition games may be replayed, rescheduled or marked as a washout.
  • Training is usually cancelled unless moved indoors.
  • Gala days and carnivals may be postponed, shortened or cancelled.

Make rainy sport weekends easier

Useful things to keep in the car:

  • towel
  • spare socks
  • plastic bag for muddy gear
  • jumper or dry top
  • water bottle
  • snacks
  • wipes

What to do if sport is cancelled

Keep it simple.

Try:

  • 10 minutes of ball skills
  • wall passes
  • footwork drills
  • skipping
  • scooter laps
  • backyard games
  • an indoor obstacle course
  • a short walk if safe
  • stretching or recovery
